Like jailer says... grounds! What I did was make sure at least one end of the gennys frame (bolt hole), the same bracket end, the brackets (where one of the bolts attach) and the flat base where it mounts have bare metal to make a ground. Also the base plate for the VR needs a ground, look for one side that has a little ground strap and ground that one.
It showed up when the guy went to test the generator and couldn't get a ground (won't work without one) because I painted the whole thing. So now I am careful about paint on places that should be grounded. Depending on where it is, I use 'star' washers too.
I think a dab of dieletric grease on those points would also work well to ensure you have a good ground as it should prevent moisture and rust from interfering later on.
On the 12v ones the ground for the headlights is a generator base bolt.
