Got home last night and couldn't wait to get to the shop this morning.

After 3+ weeks of being gone I put a little gas in 49-1 and it started on the second crank. Man it sure runs good.

Here's where it turns bad.
I decided to put the shift lever on and move the tractor back and forth. Well when I let out the clutch one heck of a racket comes form (I think)the tranny. Does it in all gears. Sounds like rattling gears.
When I rebuilt the tranny there were no chipped gears and all was in great shape. I did notice that when I put the reverse idler gear in the tranny it made more noise than it did without the idler.

Any thoughts besides I screwed something up

Hey Donny. It sounds to me like somethin in there is broke. How long does it take you to pull out the tranny?

As you probily know it is fairly easy to pull off the shifter and look into the trans to see if anything is loose or broken. If you can pull up and down on the shafts and feel it move it is probily a bad bearing. I know I had a broken 1st-reverse shifting fork. And I was able to weld it and it should hold till winter and I can split little foot and fix her right. Good luck hope it is somthing simple.

If I remember correctly, there is a bushing in the reverse idler. Did you replace that bushing I did not replace the one in Rusty and his trans makes noise in foward gears and alot of the same noise in reverse. Just a thought, by the way.

Nope nothing is broke. All the bearings have been replaced. Except for the bushing for the idler. But it seemed to fit quite nicely on the shaft. The idler gear seems a touch too short in the casting. There is some play end for end.

If I messed up the differential pre-load would this cause a rather scary rattle???

Just a thought, jack up one rear wheel, and with the tranny in neutral, top off, roll the wheel to check for where the noise is coming from. Could be a gear in backwards?

Donny, The first thing I would check would be the Chatter-Bearing in the Rattle-Gear.

Glad to see you got home safely.

Is the noise present while the tractor is idling in neutral? If yes, You may
want to check the forks/fingers on your clutch. I have one that sounded
just like trouble in the tranny. As it turns out it is the forks/fingers on the
clutch. One is slightly loose and it hits and transmitts the vibration to the
tranny gear train.

Can eaisly be checked by removing the inspection cover and inspecting
with a flashlight and the tractor running and blocked. While under the
tractor reach up and pull the clutch pedal and slowly release and chech
for a difference in noise or vibration.

Just a thought.

The tractor is very quiet in neutral and when I push in the clutch. It starts to clatter only when releasing the clutch in any gear. It is a new clutch and PP from JP's.

I went out tonight to trun the lights out but got side tracked...I took the idler gear shaft out and found the through hole somewhat wallared out. It doesn't seem as though the shaft could be making all that noise.

The idler gear does have about .030" end clearance. Don't know if this may be too much

is the noise present when the clutch is out and the trans is in neutral? that would eliminate the countershaft and pinion gear.
is the oil galley for the rear top shaft bearing free of rust? otherwise, with the shields in place, no 90W will really get to the bearing.

When in neutral clutch in or out, the only noise I hear is the puuuuuuuuuur of the engine.

Well..............That rules out the muffler bearing!!!!!

Heck with it I'm going to get a gallon of prop wash and a foot of flight line.
