Best Front End Width

I just removed the front axle on my 51 for cleaning up and painting. It is the adjustable type and is set at the minimum width position. While I've read in previous postings by others that I trying to move the arms will be near impossible, if I could what is the best setting for general useage (mowing, hauling, plowing, etc)? That is, what are the pros and cons of front end width and since I've got it off, should I even try?

Thanks

Paul

Paul,

I think it makes sense that IH made the non-adjustable front axle to the width that seemed optimum. That's the width yours is now. Hillside stability, some specialty crops, special implements (mid mount disk plow), etc. are reasons for the adjustable axle. Do any of those reasons apply?

Nope, none of those apply to me. I didn't know that the standard width on the nonadjustable is the minimum width on the adjustable. Thanks for that information George - I'll leave it alone.
