What happens when you turn the wheels???

My cub had a stuck engine, so I jacked up the back thinking I could put it in gear and bump the tires back and forth to help break it free. I also pulled the shifter out to check the drive line and the clutch inpection plate and pulled the starter off to check the flywheel and the head is removed.

The stuck engine has been resolved, but I have some questions on the driveline:

With the tractor in gear I rotate the wheels but the pistons do not go up and down. If I rotate the flywheel the pistons and tires rotate. The clutch seems to engage and disengage fine.

the question: if you jack the back tires off of the ground, put the tractor in gear and rotate the tires what should happen?

bwatson,

Just jack up one wheel. Leave the other on the ground so it doesn't turn. Put the transmission in 3rd gear. These two things will make the engine turn the easiest.

What you descirbe is normal. With both wheels off the ground the differential allows one wheel to spin backwards when you turn the other forward.
