Governor install

Postby EZ » Mon Apr 12, 2004 11:13 am

Hi guys,
I am ready to put my governor, timing cover, and pulley back onto the front of engine. Thing is, I cannot find the single punch mark on the idler gear to line up the governor. All the other punch marks are lined up. So here is my question. Looking at the front of the engine at the idler gear, with the 2 punch marks lined up with the 2 punch marks on the crank-shaft gear. If you count the gear tooth as 1 from the leftmost punch mark on the idler, how many teeth to where the single punch mark should be?
The idler has 36 teeth altogether. Remember this is a /67 Loboy with a 12v ditributor system, no magneto.

Thanks.

E.Z.,

The mark is on the back of the gear. The manual doesn't explain that very well. There are 15 teeth between the two marks.

The single punch mark is on the opposite side of the govenor gear. It is on the side away from the front of the engine, the side toward the distributor. You need to paint (white-out works good) the two gear teeth on either side of the double punch mark and I like to paint the back of the tooth on the govenor with the single mark so I can see when they mesh correctly. Be sure to lube the govenor seal and you have to "roll" the govenor into mesh with the timing gear. Also lube the front main seal with a little oil and leave the front cover loose until you have the pulley on so the seal will center itself.

Thanks alot guys,

I was looking at the distributor side of the gear but could not see the mark, I will now count the 15 and look real good. Things are coming together nicely.

better to install the large seal after you time the governor assembly.

there is also a mark on the housing on the distributer side at about 2 oclock. the slot for the dist drive will point at it when you are in the correct tooth. assuming you are at TDC#1.
