It works ... REALLY!
Hi!
My '52 Lo-Boy works! The new carb has it running about as smoothly as I could wish. I mowed for about 3-12 hours yesterday without a stoppage except for running out of gas and re-tourquing a few bolts. This is AMAZING! I've never had this kind of luck with it!
It is still possible to bog down, but at least now I assume that's just because I'm exceeding the torque capacity of the engine.
It's running a Woods 59 three-blade mowing deck. It will start it up fine (though you can really feel that inertia drag the engine down as it's spinning up) and does a very nice job in "normal" duty. However, due to all our recent rain and the fact that I haven't gotten the early start on mowing that I would have liked, a lot of my grass is 15" - 18" tall. Add that to some decent uphill grades on parts of the property and I had to jockey the touch-control lever quite a lot to keep the tallest and thickest of the grass from choking it out.
It has been a lot of work and frustration, but I am very happy now! Thank you all for your advice and encouragement!

Is it one of those reproduction IH carbs, a zennith, or a original rebuild IH carb? I glad your story has a happy ending.

Re: It works ... REALLY!
Spinning a 3-blade Woods mower in 15 - 18" tall grass is going to be tough for any tractor to pull... When we used to mow the field when I was growing up, we tried to do the mowing once a month, and if it was a rainy month, the grass would be that tall... We would have to try to do most of our mowing on the "downhill run". Congrats at getting it running!

Well, I did say it was a mish-mash of parts, right? I think I was thinking '58, to tell the truth. I'll have to look up the numbers I do have again to be sure.

I guess you can take the average of the casting dates to determine a year? Johnny Cash would be proud. He picks them up at the factory, they are much cheaper that way.

Re: It works ... REALLY!
Yeah, the grass is tough. I've got about 2-1/2 acres to mow and it's taken me about 4 hours to get through about 2 of those acres so far. If I can keep 'er running now, I'll mow every couple of weeks through the spring and it shouldn't be nearly so bad. I live on a spring, so some parts of the property stay damp enough to leave standing water in a fresh tire track most of the time. And with the rain we've been having around here the stuff is thick and tall. Mowing on the downhill pass is certainly the way to go!
The carb I bought is this one from TM: http://www.tmtractor.com/new/fl/125fp.htm. Original style, and it sure is pretty! I got a new fuel line as well, though it had to be cut down a bit to fit.
Yeah, I'm having fun and my kids are in love!

P.S. -- Hey Cowboy! Congrat's on your new companion! I hear tons of great stuff about S&W's model. You should have a real winner!

Thanks Sam
I have only been shooting once or twice a year. But the second clip I put five shots through one hole the size of a quarter at 25 feet. I think thats great for a band new gun. I got it at the S&W days sale brand new for $833 out the door + a $100 rebate that I actually sent in
