Outer rear axle seal

Postby artc » Fri Mar 26, 2004 4:30 pm

Primer Pete was headed for paint till he developed a leak on the outer axle seal. Based on the need to press off the bearings, I (Shhh!) took a shortcut and didn't replace that seal. of, course, it drips on the floor as if to say, do it right or do it over!

the old seal has an inner retainer, steel separating ring, leather cup/spring, steel separating ring, and another seal for dirt.

the new seal 473468 is of course a one piece design, and i assume i need to file off the stakes that held the retainer on, but is there anything else i need to know or reinstall?

ATIS list says use old retainer, but is that referring to the outside part?

atrc,

Just rebuilt both finals on 49-1. I was able to reuse the felt washers in front of the seal. Didn't need to file any of the retainer. It needed a little more peen in fact. Used an automatic center punch.

thanks, Donny. i used the outer leather and onr of the steel retainers and it spaced it pretty well. had to use the dremel to remove the stakes, though. never would have drove the new seal in otherwise. all together now. grease back in.

drum roll!!! Pete's ready for paint! A body shop friend of mine is going to do it for me. :) 8) :D :D :D :D

artc:

Could you post a picture of the painted tractor when finished? I'm a sucker for looking at freshly painted tractors - dreaming for when I can get mine painted.

Yup, plan to! My first effort at refurbishing anything for show/parade. But it's stuck in my shop at the moment..... An IH Hough-30 payloader is in the doorway with all 4 wheels off, awaiting brake wheel cylinders and seals. One of the toys for the Zagray Farm Museum.
