floor pan - WARNING!

Postby delawhere » Fri Mar 28, 2008 4:25 pm

saw where ralph had a "how to" on floor pan removal. so i started. the shaft and pedals were a little rough, but they finally gave in. then came the big bolts that hold the seat post. folks, i'm 60 yrs old and i have never in my life came across bolts that were as mean as these. i honestly thought they were welded in. 2 days of penetrating oil. heat, oil, heat, hammer and chisel, heat ,oil. it wen't on and on. so here comes the wife. hey use my dremmil tool. i cut across the base then down thru the top and bingo, they came out. the thing is ralph never said i would need band aids.

Never saw a bolt under 1inch I can't break off with a 5 foot piece of pipe on a 3/4 inch drive breaker bar. Thats why i like 6 and 4 point sockets.

air impact is amazing in careful doses. i rarely get out the breaker bar. each broken bolt equals 1 hour labor, in my book
if you dont have air...hold pressure on the bolt and hit the wrench with a hammer. my grandfather used that for his entier life...never had an impact wrench :!:

Yup, I had the same trouble, but a long wrench got 'em.
Lesson?
Don't forget to put some kind of schmutz on them when you install the new ones! Oil, grease, never "squeeze" etc.
Those floor panels are a pain -- I had to saw the pedal shaft off about 4" from the end to remove one. Welded a short length of cold rolled shaft (3/4" Dia.) on to fix. V'd them good and used a "V" block for alignment.

To get the 2 seat bolts off mine, I ended up welding a 1" short bolt to the heads of the rounded off ones, (battery acid), then got the "big bar" after them, and slowly worked them loose and put plenty of used oil around the threads once they came loose!----Still don't have the seat put back on that one! thanks; sonny

Ditto.

Start out with low air pressure, around 60 lbs, and let the air gun hammer on it. Did this with battery box bolts and they all came loose without breaking. Couldn't get them to budge before I got the air gun out. Heads of the bolts were pretty well rusted too and I had to use a bolt-out extractor from Sears. The low pressure lets the air gun hammer without putting to much pressure on the bolt and jars it to let it loosen.
