Seed hoppers

Postby Billy Fussell » Mon Mar 24, 2008 4:25 pm

Just curious. You folks that have planters on your cubs, and acutally use them, what kind of seed hoppers do you have, and what do you plant with them? I have the single seed hopper with both the corn and cotton bottoms and some plates to go with each. I plant sweet corn, all kinds of peas, butter beans and pinto beans. I use the corn bottom to plant with.

I have the Richmond type hopper and a few seed plates now. I have never planted with it. I just bought it last summer so I am hoping this first year planting with it will be successful. I am hoping I can plant corn, beans and sunflowers.

I use a Richmond hopper the most, but will be using the combination hopper more as I have aquired a duplex hopper and it mounts to the combination hopper frame.I plant all my corn peas and beans with it.
Will try planting pumpkins this year. use to plant beets but broke the plate.
Planted the taters this year with a bacca planter

David,

Which hopper did your beet plate fit? In the outside event I see one around here.

Billy, I use the POAX hopper with the corn bottom. I plant corn, okra, peas, butterbeans, squash, green beans. I had a blank plate that I drilled out to plant the large speckled butter beans with and it does a fantastic job with them. I can also plant pepper seed but don't need that much pepper, however growing of pimento pepper used to be a big time crop in our part of the country. Pete

So far, It looks like I am the only one using the single seed hopper. Leave it to me to be different.

Hey Billy, if it works for you, that is the only thing that matters. I keep hoping to run across a duplex hopper at a reasonable price, but so far I have not done so. It will bolt right on my hopper base. Pete

I have a planter with the Richmond hopper and several plates. I haven't used it though. I only plant about 1/3 acre of various things and I have 2 of the Earthway planters that I use (bought one then was given one). I do plan to side dress with the planter this year, though, so that might spur me to use the planter in the future. I know what that would lead to though ... a bigger garden, just to get more time in with the planter. :D

Kevin, there is a "single seed" hopper that uses different plates from the Richmond hopper that you have.
