Great night last night working on Good Ol' Merlin(cub)

Postby Hengy » Thu Mar 20, 2008 9:09 am

Hey all...

I am just tickled... I got some good quality time with Merlin(cub) last night. This was the first shop time that I have had in weeks and I took the opportunity to get some work done! Merlin's charging circuit was not working despite a rebuild of the generator by our own Deputy Jailer (podge), so I wanted to get that rolling. With some advice by Josh and by John *$#% Cub Owner and David Bennett, I finally got up the nerve to open the dust cover on the generator...

Well, it seemed that one of the brushes wasn't seating well so I lifted the arm that holds the brush and checked them. All looked well with those, so I put a gentle pressure on each brush in turn while I rotated the pulley end, and I could feel that each brush was now making contact. Put the Generator back on the tractor, and used a piece of advice from Josh... Before I put the wires back on, I touched a wire from the starter hot terminal to the "A" terminal on the generator...whalla...the generator started motoring! ( I only did this for a short time just to check)

I knew that I would be "in the chips" now... so I put all the wiring back as it was supposed to be, and put the hood back on. Wired up the lights and hooked the battery back up. Polarized the generator and fired up the tractor.......

WOW... what a good strong charge. The tractor goes like it should from low charge, to high charge, dim lights, and bright (less dim) lights...

I am so excited...Keep in mind that I have never done anything like this to a car in the past. I change my own brakes on the car and can "figure things out" usually when I need to, but I feel a sense of accomplishment that is different than when I work on other things. I have encountered so many "firsts" with this tractor, that I am constantly amazed...

Thanks for letting me ramble! And thanks to Josh (Deputy Jailer), David Bennet, John #$%%^ Cub Owner, Eugene and Lurker Carl for helping me through this part of my project...

Now on to helicoiling the final drive so I can get my drawbar on...

Mike your only enemy is fear. You are one whole lot better than you fear you will be. Just do it.

Better get her back together Mike. I see they are calling for 4-8+inches of snow for Dubuque north into Wisconsin. Last time I checked, it was MARCH 20th, the 1st day of spring. Nice job on the generator!! You supposed to get any snow?

Mike: Looks like you are making great strides on repairs. Do check the implement bolt holes located under the TC unit before returning the helicoil kit. They aren't commonly problem areas but I have needed to repair one. Also, check the ones beneath the front of the motor where cultivator tool bars are secured. It pays to check all while you have the tools at hand to do repairs. Dan

Dan, I did actually check the bolt holes on my torque tube. One of them was so wallowed out that I didn't need to drill it. I just ran the tap into the walloed out hole and then inserted the helicoil into it. I was pleased with those results.

I finally borrowed a 1/2 chuck drill from a collegue here at work, so this weekend (if I can get time with all of the Easter goings-on at church), I hope to get the final drive helicoiled...

Rudi, I will take pictures...It is gonna be great!

Mike: No rush on returning the helicoil unit. Keep it as long as needed. Dan
