Timing Issue

Postby Pony Master » Sun Mar 16, 2008 10:19 am

I am sure most of you remember the posts I had about trying to install my mag. My governor is not timed correctly (I hope to fix that at DocFest), but when I reinstalled the distributer something has changed. Now if you pull the throttle back to idle to fast, it will die. I have to set the timing by ear because my timing pointer is missing and my crank pulley is broken. Are there any tricks anyone could give for getting it right.

Hey Pony- In your posts from before, I believe Jim Becker suggested a way to find TDC at the piston itself through the plug hole? Look back in that thread and it might give you an idea.

Setting it by ear depends on your ear. Setting it for maximum idle RPM should be very close.

So what you are telling me George, is to let it idle, and adjust my timing until it has the maximum rpms?

Finding TDC is fairly easy, but with nothing to reference it to, using a timing light is all but impossible. I have to set it by ear, and I need a little experianced advice to get it right.

I have to set the timing by ear because my timing pointer is missing and my crank pulley is broken. Are there any tricks anyone could give for getting it right.
Locate TDC #1 piston or #4 piston. Doesn't have to be on the compression stroke.

Paint the pulley and the timing gear covers. Then with a thin (white) marker, put matching marks on the pulley and the timing gear cover. If you get ambitious you can put a second mark on the pulley 21/32" in advance of the TDC mark.

If you can see the keyway in the crankshaft pulley. When the keyway is located at 12:00 o'clock the #1 and #4 piston should be at TDC.

You could use a vacuum gauge.
I have an excuse. CRS.
