What was leaking?

Postby EZ » Sun Mar 07, 2004 8:45 pm

Hi all,
I removed the rear wheel today nearest the transmission. The whole inside of the rim as well as the final drive were coated in a thick oily black goo. Something had been leaking all those years ago when it was put away. Thing is, I'm not sure what was leaking. The final drive pan gasket on that side is immaculate, as far as I could tell all the fluid was still in there, nice and clean too when it came out. Anyone know what the black mess might be indicative of?

I'm wondering, there was a lot of blowby of oil past the head gasket, and a leak in the underslung exhaust at the muffler clamp under the tranny, maybe all the black was from exhaust.

Anyone seen this before?

I don't think my hub seal is leaking, looks pretty good.

My vote would go for the exhaust since you mention it is black and oily and with the conditions of the blow by and exhaust leak nearby.
