6V Battery Cables Positive&Negative lines - QUESTION

Postby Johnnyrock70 » Fri Feb 22, 2008 3:12 pm

HELP!
can seem to locate the 6V Battery Cable lines I need for my '49 Farmall Cub.
I've checked numerous Cub sites to no avail. Are they not for sale on these sites simply because they can be purchased at any auto parts supply??
My negative line is real short, and the positive cable is real long. Thanks to all for any help.

Check TM's Tractor Partsw site. He is at the bottom of this page. He sell them. Quick service. Most of the time next day.

TM has them.

I think I just had mine made up from welding cable but that was a long time ago.

49 as standard was positive ground. The short one hooks to the frame right near the battery box. The long one to the starter for a 49 with the pull rod on the starter.

Case IH dealers still carry them. The long cable is 84".

Should be the opposite, the short cable should be pos to grd, the long one neg to the starter.

Lil' Red has an excellent observation...

Are you saying the long cable was between the starter and the battery's POS terminal? Or were you making the assumption that the Cub is negative ground system? If the battery's POS terminal is connected to the battery, then someone has either converted the Cub to a negative ground system or put the battery cables on backwards. If the Cub is a negative ground system then it would make sense for the POS battery terminal to connect to the starter with the chassis as the NEG return and connection to the battery. But... The '49, as delivered, is a POS ground system.

For cables, I use welding cable for the connection to the starter and, stealing Big Dog's idea, use a woven ground strap to tie the battery to the chassis. The welding cable is readily available, cheaper than ready-made battery cables, and much more flexible.

BTW Welcome to the forum, keep asking questions! Working with the Cub and the people in this forum is some of the best fun you'll ever have.

The cables are available at your local autoparts stores. My guess is that the IH/Cub parts advertisers on this site do not handle battery cables for that reason. It really doesn't make much sense to pay shipping and handling on an item when those charges are more than the local item cost. From the sellers standpoint - it doesn't make sense to tie up inventory dollars in a slow or nonmoving item.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Cub's were positive ground from the factory. Positive to the frame, and negative to the starter.

Humm. I always thought the positive cable bolted to the hole in the battery box for the ground.

These cables came from TM and the battery came from TSC.

Looks good to me Jim and also looks like new
I ran mine over the end and under the battery to a base bolt setting the battery on 3/8 inch rubber to clear the cable.

Jim, that was the original factory set up. Over time, sometimes it was difficult to get a good ground. Bigdog's "How To" of running the braided cable over the front of the battery and down under it and sharing the battery box bolt is just another way of seeking a good ground. Also, a lot of boxes are missing the top and front and it helps keep the battery "tied down".

Hey redfin,

Sorry didn't get back earlier. Here is a link to some pics I took when another forum member asked for 1949 cub photos of one that was finished. It's not completed yet but close.
