Cub Dash - two holer

Postby Mike in NC » Mon Feb 11, 2008 10:10 pm

My '48 Cub has two approximately 2" holes located side by side. The one on the left has the amp meter and the other is just a hole. None of the dash's I see in pictures or on Ralph's site have this setup. Does anybody know what was supposed to go in the empty hole? This old girl belonged to an old timer who was the original owner. When I bought it from him years ago, I asked him about it and he said at one time it had a cover for the hole, but he knocked it loose and lost it.
Thank the Farmer for your food and thank Wall Street for leaving you too poor to buy any.

There was never anything in the hole. It is, however, an excellent location to re-locate your oil pressure gauge.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Bigdog, you never fail to amaze me! I think you are the encylopedia of all things Cub! I really think you should contact Motorbooks and write a book on Farmall Cubs. You could apply the royalties to the purchase of more small red tractors, new sheds etc. Thanks again.

Many of them had the hole prepunched kind of like in an electrical box, while some dashes did not. AS BD said though, it is an excellent place to relocate the oil pressure gauge.

That would be an excellent look, BigDog... how does one plumb the gauge? Metal tubing? Flexible line? Inquiring minds!

I tried the plastic that comes with the gauge kits, but it didn't last. I am now using copper, but that will eventually harden from the vibration. steel would be best, but finding any small enough would be a real challenge.

Go to any parts store that sells aftermarket car gauges. Get an installation kit for an oil gauge. They come in plastic or copper tubing. I did it on my Farmall C. I used the plastic 8 years ago and it is still holding strong. The key is routing it free of sharp edges and do not kink it. Looks factory and makes it much easier to see.

I like that! I was thinking of relocating my oil pressure gauge to somewhere more visible and this is the ticket. The only problem is I do not have a two hole dash. I guess I could use a Greenlee hole punch and make one myself. If not, what year Cubs had these two hole dashes?

i used a 2" circle saw on mine. worked like a champ.

If the truth be told, i used a 2 1/8th inch circle saw as we thought the gauge was a little too big for a 2" hole, and ended up making it too big, that is why there is door trim around the gauge, to ensure that it doesnt fall through and hides the hole that is too big.

The early - long eared dashes had the double hole. I think the changeover was late 49.

Copper tubing with a loop or 2 in it should solve the hardening problem from stress you mention.

Thanks BD, I guess I will have to see if I have a 2" Greenlee hole punch in my tool box.

I did something similar, I didn't like the hour meter bracket or the suggested location. With the help of Bigdog I should have a picture for you. I just can't get the hang of posting pictures on this site.
