HAH! He got offended!!!!!

Postby John68 » Thu Jan 31, 2008 3:28 pm

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/grd/557945383.html

I emailed him and told him it wasn't worth more than $2500, if everything were separately sold for the high side of the current price ranges. He told me that I was a Gypsy!
I just figured I would help the guy out, since he is local, and probably doesn't know what this stuff is worth. Apparently he thinks that is gold plating and not just yellow paint!

Man thats just wrong.....This man had an incredible price on his merchandise and you come along and slam him for it. He's just a trend setter...trying to pump the antique farmall market like housing was 4-5 years ago....wait till the "certified equipment appraisers" get in on the mix...pretty soon the banks will be lending money to buy these old junkers and then we can stop worrying about the economy.

Hmmm:

For a cost comparison, I would say that there is a problem on both ends. I think he is about $1,200.00 too high and yours is about $2,000.00 too low. So for an excercise in value..

Let's review:

Here's a package deal that includes: a Farmall cub, two Woods mower decks, a Woods lawn vacuum, two additional Cub rear tires on rims and two additional front tires on rims, and a fully restored motor by a master mechanic that came off a hay bailer but is simply a Cub engine, so you have a second engine ready to go for the Cub. There are also at least $100 worth of tune up parts to go with it too. I warn you the tractor is a bit rough in terms of needng a good paint job, but all of the equipment works. $7500 for the package or I'd like to hear your counter offer

Image Image
  • 1 Cub - $1,500.00 low side -$2,500.00 high side
  • 1 Rebuilt C-60 engine $750.00 low side $1,500.00 high side
  • 1 Woods Lawn Vac $250.00 low side, $700.00 high side
  • 2 Woods Mower Decks - $250.00 low side, $750.00 high side
  • 2 rear tires on rims - $100.00 low side $500.00 high side
  • 2 front tires on rims - $100.00 low side $250.00 high side
  • $100.00 tune up parts extra...

Low side = $3,050.00
High side = $6,300.00

These are about representative of the prices I see on :eBay: regularly.. so he is a bit high, but dicker room is available. I think $750.00 would be fair for the rebuilt C-60 unless it was completely rebuilt.. new crank, pistons etc... then closer to the $1,500.00 would be about right. The Cub is not out of line at say $1,850.00 or so.. nice looking Cub :o The mower decks and the vaccum would be fair at a middle of the road price and a real good deal at low side..

I think $2,500.00 is a little too little for this package.. it is worth at least the $3,000.00 even here.. and that a package offer of say $4,000.00 to $4,500.00 would take it home...

But that is just my opinion. Now.. the operative question.. what would I pay for it.. :?: Not a lot.. say about $2,500.00 to $3,000.00 cause the only things of interest to me would be the Cub, spare mill and maybe.. maybe one of the mowers.. However, for someone who has a good use for this kind of equipment.. it would be worth it at the $4,500.00 and still have room to figure you done good :!:

This is why I said in the other thread that with prices varying around the country it is just to hard to value anything on a national basis.

I wouldn't want to venture a guess as to what this Cub is worth in Pittsgurgh since I don't live there and I don't know the economy. But I will ask this "Is he nuts?"
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Cubs are about as common around here as hen's teeth, but that Cub with that deck would only bring 1500 to 1800. The rest would be anybody's guess. I know that there are areas where it would be worth more. Transportation is becoming a big factor as well.

Here's what I figured...

lowboy cub that is not restored and has a weak engine. $1400 is about what they are going for around here. The rebuilt engine without knowing to what extent it was rebuilt would go for about $600. ($2000 for tractor with the rebuilt engine)
The 59 mower decks are everywhere around here. I sold one 3 years ago for $150 and was happy to get that much for it. So $300 for the mower decks. Tires and rims, and the vaccuum system are not high demand, and if put back on craigslist, would maybe fetch $200 in a reasonable amount of time.

I saw a restored lowboy with a fresh engine, 59 mower deck, turf fronts and rears, ag fronts and rears on separate rims, front snow blade, tire chains, and as the salesman boasted "A full tank of gas" sell for $2800 at a local dealership, where it was serviced and traded by the original owner. Most people around here who ran cubs for lawn mowing have moved over to smaller lawn tractors, or compact diesels. The hottest thing going is the zero turn mowers. Cubs for lawn mowing are not in demand.

It would be different if this was at a dealership, or the guy was spending lots of money on advertising. I have a 1984 Ford 1210 3cyl diesel, 1300 hours, 18 hp, hydro, 4wd, turf tires, fresh professional paint with high detail on the components(not just slapped on), 3 pt hitch, mid mount and rear pto, 60 inch mid mount mower, front hydraulic blade with power angle, locking diff, loader valve, and "full tank of fuel"... Asking $5500 for it is like asking a stranger for a kidney. Nobody wants it, unless the price is $3000. Insulting? not really. You can't get offended or insulted when buying and selling used stuff. You bought it new, you used it, or used it all up as the case may be, maintained it, or not. invested into parts and fixed it when it broke, but you got your use out of it, and that means you already got yoru money out of it. So selling it for the same price that you paid for it is not something we should expect. You got your money's worth, now get rid of it if you don't want to keep it or continue maintaining it. Anything that I get from the sale of that tractor is just money back for all the work I have into maintaining it. So, rather than sell it for $3000, I'll hold on to it and wash it, wax it, and occasionally use it, because I could never go out and buy one in the same condition as this one, for the same money.
John

I think that offering only thirty per cent of an asking price is a good way to offend anybody. I sure would be...and I'd probably have used a stronger word than "gypsy', chuckle chuckle.

The only thing John offered was an opinion. That's allowed. Being offended by the opinion is allowed, too. But if he hears enough opinions he might get an idea of what it's really worth.
