time for cub number 2 ?

Postby rick 48 cub » Sat Jan 26, 2008 1:45 pm

I purchased my 48 cub about five years ago. I brought the engine in and had it bored .060 and added domed pistons. With the added hp it has been wonderful with its C-3 mower, and during the winter plowing snow.

However, it is a real pain (literally) trading the mower for the plow. I am thinking that it will be cheaper for me to purchase a second cub than to pay for hernia or back surgury. That way I would have a winter cub and a summer cub.

Since I have one of the very early cubs 18,xxx, I thought it would be fun to also have one of the latest cubs.

So here is my question: What is the last year that standard cub was built ? I want to have the same "offset" cultivision, along with greater power engine for the mower.

Thanks, Rick

Rick,

Be Careful! As a general rule, there are very few people who own just two of something. Many people here own one cub or three or more cubs!! I own three. I barely bought #2 and #3 was on the trailer heading home. To prove my point in our Model T club, it is the same there a few lone T owners but most have a minimum of three; we are down to 6 have had a total of 9 at one point.    8) 8)

Two would be a great idea for you. I do have to swap a mower and a blade on my 49, but I have that down to a science; only takes about a half hour. Good luck and happy hunting! A 79 would be cool, but they seem to be far and few between. Remember the Loboy is always an option for mowing, but I do love pushing snow with mine also!

Rick,
Check with Ralph he had a couple of late model cubs recently both run very nicely, they just needed a little TLC.

Ron
I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

If you want a Cub with similar HP, the hi dome piston models range from 75-79 starting with serial number 264568. They are rare as these years had some of the lowest production number over the life of the tractor. Less than 5600 tractors total for the series of "New" International Cubs.

Most of these were yellow and white but there were red ones made too. They were distinguished by a long decal the length of the hood with blue stripes.

Rick:

I had one.. Ellie-Mae Clampett a 1948 Cub. Then I got her cousin Jethro a 1951 Cub that had seen better days. Then I got her Granny a 1947 Cub. Then I ended up with Jed a 1955 Cub I think he was. He didn't last long, Scotty D has him now.. but see how fast a herd can grow?

I am looking for another Jed, but that will be off in the distance for a while, unless I get real lucky, win the 649 tonight, in which case I will head up to Bathurst and get that booful 1951 yaller Cub... :!: :big smile:

I agree with these guys, I saw both of the ones Ralph has and I wish I could add them to the barnyard. You would definitely do good to talk to him.

Now remember if you do add #2, be carefull. They will multiply from that point on. Don't ask me how I know!
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

A cub for each implement. No more sore back, skinned knuckles, etc. No more digging through the manuals, because you forgot how it installs. Ed

I would have to agree, tractors in general are an addiction just ask my wife. I bought a VA case for the mayor of a small town in my area. Did not like it like I thought I would, so I traded it in for an Allis Chalmers C with a woods 59. That VA was the last tractor I have given up. I did trade a VAC for a Super A. I guess I just am not a fan of the small Case tractors  So, I have owned 13 tractors total in my life and I have 11 in the shed now. Make sure you have plenty of room before you get #2 because once you do they find a way to reproduce like rabbits.

You will probably be happy with most any Cub. You won't like the prices of the real late ones. I did the math once and found that they made more 50's in two weeks than they did the entire 71 model year.

Sounds like a Lo Boy would work well too, but the one disadvantage is you couldn't easily (or practically) share implements between the two. The mounting is different on mowers for example.

Tell people you are looking and enjoy the hunt, eventually the right one will show up.

Got so many I quit counting....

Our first Cub came with several implements. I thought, a Cub #2 would help reduce implement swap. I was patient waiting for #2 ... problem was that when I found it, it also came with a slew of implements. Problem still wasn't solved!!
