Choke problem

Postby Poncho » Fri Jan 25, 2008 3:03 pm

My choke has worked fine by the carb, for some reason the pull sticks somewhere. Not much of a problem, just inconvenient if I am on the tractor. I only need to choke it in the winter. Periodically I have sprayed down by the carb to loosen things up but never got the pull to work, however this last time I sprayed and when I turn the choke off it kills my engine. Any suggestions? Is it time for a rebuild? Thanks

Make sure your choke lever isn't loose on the back side of the carb. Mine came loose and dropped down. It jammed itself enough that when I pulled the choke rod it was actually reversed.

I just reread this and confused myself. Hopefully you'll see what I mean :D

Make sure the lever points straight down when the choke is off and that it is tight on its shaft. I suspect yours is pointing straight up? :?

Me lever does point straight up from the shaft of the carb in the off postion. Do I need to redo something . It has always been this way since I owned him and previously worked fine. How does one go about tightening it?

Do you see the cap screw on the choke lever? It is a slot head screw. That is what tightens the lever to the shaft. The shaft should be knurled/fluted.. which helps the lever grab onto the shaft firmly when tightened.

Or, the shaft is worn so badly, you will need serious shimming to get
the lever to hold  TM sells choke lever replacements should
you need one--kinda pricey--but they work well 8)

It is loose, thanks. When I tighen the cap screw the lever on the outside of the carb should be pointed up when the pull lever by the key is in meaning the choke is off. This is what the positions look like in the manual. Am I correct in this assumption? Also in the picture is that clamp in the correct position when the choke is off?

When the outside lever is up then your pull rod should be pulled out. Pulling the rod shuts the choke.

I am probably confusing myself and others but should I tighen the inside choke lever where it falls when the pull rod is out and the outide lever is up?

I put the outside lever up and pulled the rod out with it hooked to the inside lever. I made sure the inside lever was near the bottom and then tightened it. That way when I pushed the rod in the inside lever went forward from the bottom and opend the choke back up.

Or you can put the outside lever at 3 o'clock with the choke rod in and the inside lever slightly forward in the down position and tighten.

Whichever way you get the same result.

You may have to adjust it a tad but you should be alright.

I was able to loosen the capscrew and get everything working the way it should. It is still a little sticky. Would it be better to clean the area with choke cleaner or PB Blaster or can I just oil it? Thanks

I loosened mine with PB Blaster only because that is what I had at the time. Try choke cleaner if you got it.

I was looking at a neighbor's Cub and noticed his had done the flip over too. I bet it is a common problem.

I just expected to get the choke working, but with your help I have the choke in the correct place and I can now choke from the comfort of my seat!. We had a couple of inches of snow on Friday, so I was able to get in some seat time. I got the drive cleaned in time for more snow tonight.
Thanks to a bunch of great guys who are willing to help anyone.
