Cub Gets Stuck In First Gear

Postby 2cubs2cases » Wed Jan 16, 2008 4:26 pm

My cub gets stuck in first gear when pulling heavy loads. It does not want to come out. When the load is gone and I drive it around it shifts normal again. Bad Fork?

Cub stuck in 1st gear

I would start with the shifter forks, because that would be relatively quick and easy to check. Hopefully, it is not related to the clutch spline shaft or countershaft.

Are you attempting to shift while the tractor is moving?

Nope. Put tractor in gear and let out clutch slowly. Pulls fine. When I get stopped it will not shift out of first gear. The only thing that works is to drive it around without a load and then try to shift and it comes out. I only shift when completely stopped.

I think I would pull something until it binds up and then remove the top of the transmission to see if you can determine where the binding is.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

One other thing - check the ball on the end of the shift rod to see if it's worn and maybe not throwing the slider far enough to fully engage.

I have a shift rod with a pretty good ball. It's for a lowboy (bend in shifter). If you want it's yours. Just PM me with the address.
