Dang,

You guys are good.

I think spark quality is good with all new ignition components.

Havn't had a timing light since the my VW microbus daze. So looks like i need to get one.

I almost just want to get a new carb and be done with it, but already i've learnt lots so I should just stick to making this one work.

Buzzard Wing, you should grab the jig that ScottiesDad had made up using Don's as a template, it worked great. Of course both tops I unwarped were lacking the idle inlet tube.

I'll report back on exhaust smoke after checking timing, installing an idle inlet tube and ensuring use of fresh gas.

some of the gas I had in yesterday i know was old, and there was definite blue smoke (not oily smelling) while it idled.

I did note that when i was running yesterday with the govenor linkage removed and just diddling with the carb throttle that the tendency to stall out completely went away (but plenty of smoke)

and this made me remember that advancing the throttle w/ govenor attached would create over-rich condition (big smoke) as the motor commenced to stall out (by drowning?)

thanks all.

Joe

Joe... the idle tubes are available but Donny M says that is part of the 'matched set' along with the main jet, so may not be ideal to just replace it.

I have an inductive timing light that you could use. (just gotta hook it to 12v).

Someone mentioned the pivot point for the governor.... be sure to spray something on it to free it up. you can get at the end on the right side (round hole in the casting) and where the arm comes up to the spring.

Scottys Dad is supposed to be down to fetch the flail mower, or I may deliver it soon so I may have an opportunity to get the IH carb flattened out soon. But I may just leave the zenith on the Lo Boy.

Sadly,

I wonder if the main jet will ever come out again.

The jet has been sheared off by some previous owner, and a small nut.screw.washer put in its place. It was leaking so I JBWelded that together - careful not to plug the jet.

maybe
i can finesse the jet out of it's place w/ some heat and lubricant.

the ebay disaster carb main jet socket is simply stripped (and no idle inlet tube).

Maybe I've learned enough and should order that carb from TM.

Then I can use the flail mower.

Joe, might be time to bite the bullet, and spring for a new carb. ConnectiKit had a similar one repaired, but it cost as much as a new one from TM. Ed

Joe:

I would probably be inclined to ask Rick P if he wanted to play with that Carb. Removing the jet would probably be childs play for him as well as possibly redoing the idle tube threads. Worth a shot and maybe Rick can do something. If anyone can I guess it would be Rick, Donny or George.

A matching set of jet and tube should not be all that expensive I would think, especially if the rest of the carb is ok.

At almost $200.00 for a replacement reproduction, I would be more inclined to go with the real deal and redo it if possible. But that is just me....

Hi Joe. I agree with some of the others. Get your carb fixed and you'll be surprised what other problems might disappear. I'll do whatever I can to help you. Also, Don McCombs is one of the best with these IH carbs. You might pick his brain with some ideas :D

Guess I'll have to do more reading about the idle tubes matching the jets. I recently found out the discharge nozzles match the jets, and the air bleed goes hand in hand too.

It amazes me that when you really start digging deep with these cubs, you find all kinds of little changes that are overlooked. Most of the EBAY items aren't near discriptive enough and alot of people think one parts fits them all
