Project Idea

Postby Jerry M » Sun Dec 16, 2007 5:21 pm

"Grader Blade" - Was wondering if one of you fine gentlemen owning one of these would be willing to make measurements of each individual part of this implement. One could use the owner's manual when describing each piece along with demensions and type of stock used. I would like to build one of these.

Thanks : Jerry

Or, at the very least, the lifting lever and lifting arms. The rest can be figured out from there.

Check TM's site at bottom of page. You can purchase new reproduction lift arm parts.

I think you will find that you will pay double to build one vs. the cost to buy a used set up. At least buy the blade & then get the lifting arms from TM Tractor.

Ok, thanks for the input men. It was just an idea. I was thinking of making the blade from an old air compressor air receiver tank.

Jerry:

If you want to build a blade for a project.. I have sketched up my original blade before I got the Cub-54. This will adapt well to using the old compressor tank.

If you look under Implement and Part Sketches and Snow Plow, this might give you some help. Although it is not the McCormick-Deering Grader Blade, the Cub-54 or Cub-54-A blades, it is well suited to the Cub and takes advantage of the Cub's strongest mounting points. I used this plow for almost 5 winters here in New Brunswick and it took a beating.

Hey, Thanks Rudi, thats a big help. I know I should have thought to look there but I had forgotten all about it. I think I will be using square tubing. Was wondering, with the cub having no more power than they do why alluminum wouldn't be strong enough and lighter too. So long as the force will be in a direct line with the length of the tubing.

Jerry:

Even though the cub only has 9 hp, remember it is drawbar hp a totally different critter. When that plow hits a hard spot, you will know it. Thankfully that particular plow has taken a lot of punishment whilst this idiot was learning and it protected Ellie from her owners stupidity.. I do not think that aluminum would have any worthwhile advantages over it's extra cost. The cub is more than enough to handle that plow.. and Ellie handled it easily.

The square tubing will be a lot easier.. I am thinking that I may end up giving the other plow to my neighbour as a thank you for helping me on the barn project... it sure was useful to me, and now that I have my Cub-54, it doesn't get mounted much anymore.

Aluminum would be lighter, and possibly easier to put on tractor. In the snow you need all the weight you can add for traction. I would use steel.
