Lo boy front axel

Postby paviking » Tue Nov 20, 2007 7:58 pm

Hey guys,
How hard is it to remove the front axel of my 68 Lo-boy? Would like to remove it so I can get a good paint job on it. Doesn't seem like it would be much. Have the stearing rods off. Do I just loosen the 2 clamps , spread em and drive the pin out? Haven't studied it real close but it's more comfortable setting here typing than layin on the concrete floor lookin at it with a dumb look on my face! Although I've been told I do the dumb look like a pro! :D
Thanks in advance, Greg

If you want to remove the entire front axle assembly crib up the tractor and remove the two bolts holding the center pivot pin. Then drive the pin out and the axle will come out. If you want the axle extensions out of the center tube, start soaking it with penetrant now.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Be sure to keep track of the 2 thrust washers that are in there.

Greg,You mentioned spreading the "clamps" after removing the bolts.
I wouldn't as they are cast. You'll see that the pin is mostly retained by the notches for the bolts. Good luck, Bob

Caution is the word! I've found that the rod is a slight interferance fit and very slight wedging (screwdriver) is helpful. Then, if the bearing has been greases on occasion the pin can be pushed out and back in. I've also seen broken castings. :(

BOB & GEORGE,
Thanks for the tips. I'll be careful. If It doesn't practically "fall" off I'll just paint it where it is. Thanks again. Greg
