rebuild a cracked block? warning a lot of questions!

Postby prebanbilly » Sun Oct 28, 2007 10:02 pm

im thinking of rebuilding my cubs motor and i think its got a cracked block.
it has a oil leak at the front bottom under the governor side and drips on my mower deck. is that a gasket problem or is my block done? i did have some oil in my water, some times it blows blue smoke when its hot.
but i think my mags rotor is worn out cause it feels loose when i had to put in new points.i think timing can cause some smoke :? what do you guys think?

If your engine has this problem don't waste money on it, especially if it may need a rebuild. Replace the engine.

Investigate for the crack for sure. My governor/Mag drive seal was leaking like a sieve when I tore my engine down, and it dripped badly. When I tore the engine down, there was NO crack there on the block, so I guess I got lucky!

I agree with Mr. Willer about getting a new engine if there is indeed a crack in that location...

I'd look it over first and if its an easy spot to weld I'd weld it. It has to be a solid clean weld with no holes.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Most cubbers understand the wisdom of avoiding a structural weld in cast iron... Especially for an engine needing an expensive rebuild.

This is an area that's already too weak, so a strong weld that weakens the surrounding metal is a poor idea. :(

I wouldn't waste a nickel on a cracked block. Let's hope Billy's problem is something else.

the 8-9-S designation indicates a casting date of 8/9/49 which corresponds to your 1949 serial number.

Egads! I hope tractor shows never become judged events.

Howdy Billy! And welcome! Fear not my friend... We make all the "Correct Police" take a chill pill before they enter. In fact, after hanging around for a while, you may see things like a Cub with a throne.

Or perhaps a Cub that isn't Red

Or even a two seater, tri-cycle Cub

This group of people may be more fun than you have had in a while. Stick around, because it keeps getting better.
