Darn kids.

I recall going to the gas station. You told the attendent how many gallons you wanted. The attendent hand pumped that many gallons of the gas into a clear container mounted on top of the gas pump. The clear container had the gallons marked on the side. Once the quantity was achieved. The hose was stuck into the gas tank and gravity drained the glass container.

We used to drive around town trying to find the lowest price usually 1/2 cent a gallon difference.

Those probably weren't the good old days. No electricity and an outhouse.

I liked the part about the free glasses beacon 8)..

I pumped gas after school in HS. Remember my daily routine of filling those glass jars with motor oil out of a tank with a great hand pump on it. Each jar had a galvinized steel funnel lid. Then stacked the glass jars full of oil on two lighted pyramid stands between the three gas pumps..regular, ethyl, and super hi octane "flight fuel"..30.9  ....The pyramids of oil jars looked beautiful at night ..they were lighted from underneath 8) 8). We were always giving something away with a fill up 8) and Eagle Stamps :D

We also had White Gas for your power mower

What about the metal caps that fit over the spouts of the glass jars? Did you use them too?
When we went on family trips dad always had the 2 burner coleman stove. That used white gas too.

White Gas

Postby allenlook » Thu Sep 15, 2005 6:28 am

My grandfather owned a small store/gas station in DownEast Maine, sold White Gas too... Wasn't that stuff 110 octane?

I have no idea of octane. It had no lead and wouldn't foul up the generator in coleman stoves and lanterns.

Unlike today's unleaded, white gas was clear as water, no additives. It did burn clean in our Lawnboy.

beacon, the galvinzed steel funnel tops on the glass jars of oil enabled you to just pour the oil into the breather...no muss, no fuss, no can to throw away...just refill it when you get time  If the customer only needed 1/2 qt. you could see it on the 8 oz embossed markers on the jar...You could buy just 16 oz if that's all you needed. 8)

I was asking about the dust covers that went on the gal funnel tops.

I guess we can remove this if they move the thread over to the HOW TO forum...

I don't remember the dust covers, but they must have been used.

White gas was the 80 octane, lead-free stuff IH recommended we use in our Cubs. No lead meant low octane back then.

Postby Chris Todd » Sat Sep 17, 2005 8:27 am

Sounds like some of you fellows miss :( those old oil jars. Coincidently my wife has one on Ebay that ends Sunday evening. I believe the # is 7181772742. I'll try to put the link also if it works. Thought someone might be interested.

Thanks.

I remember .18 in Milwaukee, and have seen .12 when the gas wars were being waged.
