Front axle

Postby Yogie » Sat Sep 22, 2007 8:47 pm

When you have the axle extension clamp loose on the front of your cub should the clamp pin be loose enough to let the front tire swing foward and back?

No the holes are most likely wallered out.

Thanks, I'll check that out also. I was really worried thinking that the tubes would be stuck together but after loosening the clamp it moved easy. The tie rods are going to be a big pain because their bent some, at least I can take them to work and apply the heat if needed...

Yogie:

Ralph might have the pins as well. You may want to get draw bar bolts and other small stuff when you order up as well. Check all the little stuff you may be missing and get it into an $8.80 box.. you can put up to 45lbs or so in the box.. so that makes it much cheaper.. :!:  :D

Yogie,

I had a tie rod that was bent a little too. I put it in a bench vise and by hand straightened it so that the two pieces could be pulled apart.

Speaking of draw bars, do you think Ralph would have these also?

When straightening the tie rods, I used a cheapy 4 ton Hydraulic press from Harbor Freight and a couple of V-blocks. Press, turn, press, turn, and keep trying. Mine had more corkscrew than I thought possible, but they straightened ok.

After I got the 2 pieces apart, I first straightened the tube until a 1/2" dowel rod slid in easily. Then I "adjusted" the solid tie rod to fit the tube. That way I wasn't chasing my tail. Like the man says, "If you have 2 watches, you never know what the real time is". A single point of truth helped me retain my sanity. Both the tube and rod are fairly springy, so I'd be a little leery of putting any heat on them.

minor straighting without heat ok
major you will use heat to straighten or heat to fasten the broken pieces together again.
either way you will use heat for major straighting

There not quite bent that bad, it's just nice knowing you have the heat on hand if needed.
I also noticed some oil coming down from the stearing box where the front axle pivots, the axle looks easy to remove out of the way but what kind of job is it to replace this seal?
I see the front main seeping a little to so I may seperate it there and do the stearing box while it's on the ground and easy to get at...
Looks like I'm going to need several seals, Does anyone know the best place to pick these up?

Thanks Rudi, I'll write all these numbers down. When I call will they have the main seal also, and maybe front wheel bearing seals to?
I'm going through this thing before painting so I want everything that drips or seeps sealed...
I'm real glad we drove around some today before I start tearing into it, my 6 year old had a blast. My wife even took it for a spin, I was about to go look for her when she came back down the street. She liked it so much she went farther than planned
