No Compression

I started working on my latest toy to get it running and found I have no compression in the #4 cylinder. The other three feel pretty good but, Of course this is the old finger over the hole method. When I pulled the plugs only #4 was wet and it didn't smell like gas. Should I start pulling the head and look for a head gasket?

Bill - Try pulling the valve cover first to see if you have a stuck valve that you may be able to free up without pulling the head.

Yep, leave it to Bigdog. #4 exhaust valve stuck open. How do I unstick it? I definitely know it aint BFH time.

I am not sure how dumb this might be.. but Cecil told me Granny had a stuck valve... and to put in some seafoam. Poof.. after she started, it took a little bit, but that valve came unstuck pronto and boy does she have compression...

There is probably something else... and I am waitning to see what they say.. hopefully this time it will stick in me brain :!:

You can try to free it from the lower end or pull the head. Can you see through the plug hole and tell how carboned up the valves are? Spray some penetrant at the stem from both above and below and see if you can work it up and down from the side.

I didn't mess with it to long. It seems to be hung up pretty good. I have no issues with yanking the head, other than the fact I might find a horror story buried under it. But, hey, better to find it now.

This is the best looking of the five I've bought during my recent whirl-wind fling, so I don't mind giving it a little extra attention.

Thanks, Eugene. I'm letting it soak over night. I can't work out there anymore until I get electric to the Big Ol' Barn (Bob). I won't pull that head just yet.

Barnyard, I'd try Eugene's "How-To" first, because there's always a chance you have one of those Cubs where the head bolts will snap during removal. Then you'll have a whole new dilemma on your hands. I've had 2 cubs with stuck valves and both were freed up with Eugene's method.

Well. I gave Eugene's method a shot and it is semi-loose. I have it now where I can push the valve down by hand with a little pressure. I have been spraying the heck out of it with that old standby - WD-40. It is starting to loosen so I will continue on with this as long as it takes.

As good as wd40 is I have found seafoam better, Kroil as well.

That's what I keep hearing. As soon as I get out to the parts house I plan to get some. The WD has been around here (several cans) so I thought I might as well use it up.
