3 or 4 quarts of Oil?

Changed the oil and filter last night in the demo. Rudi's manual said 3 quarts, it took 4 to get the dipstick to full after I started it and let it pump up. Did I add to much? I didn't know if the 3 quarts was without filter change or? Thanks Brandon.

I remember reading somewhere that it was four quarts due to the filter absorbtion.

Depending if the oil is staying up in the filter area makes a difference. For me, it takes about a week for the filter to fully drain, so it depends on how quickly you check it after the first startup after an oil change. I don't know how much oil the filter area holds, but I think going to the fourth quart is too much. Of course, I'm not sure my advice is all that good, I use 3+ quarts and my oil pan gasket is always leaking...

The filter I removed from it was very heavy, probably hadn't been changed in a while. I changed it warm so the oil came out pretty fast. I poured 3 quarts in it and didn't start it, checked it and there was no oil on the dipstick. 1/2 quart (of the 4th quart) brought it to the low mark. I started it and let it run for about 1 min, let the oil pressure come up on the guage, and then it took the rest of the quart to bring it up to the full mark. Will the oil filter drain back into the pan or stay in the filter? Brandon.

You sure you have the right combination of tube and dip stick?

It's got white paint on it, if that counts for anything.

It's a normal tube and dot headed oil cap with dipstick.

Does the pan hold 3 quarts and maybe the filter soaked up almost another quart and held it? Does the filter drain back into the pan as soon as you shut it off? Maybe most of my extra quart was still in the filter, maybe she's a slow drainer!

Brandon - I think Jim is on to something. if you didn't have oil on the dipstick after 3 quarts and not starting, something must wrong.

http://www.tm-tractor.com/gen/gen_001.htm is TM Tractor's
list of oil tubes and dipsticks. It might be worth a look.

There are two lengths of dipsticks.. The long on for the the earlier Cubs... and different caps as well.

See, I can use the word dipstick here and everybody knows what I am talking about. IF I use the word dipstick upstairs.. everybody thinks I am talking about an idjit... sometimes..  :D   :!:

Oops, heading off topic. Hard to talk about a "dipstick" without quoting Rosco P. Coltrane. "Lugnut" is the other euphemism that comes to mind.

Ran home at lunch to check it, it was driving me crazy, Here's the dipstick I have the short style 1, and I have a short tube into the block:

The cub hadn't been started since 9pm last night. I pulled the dipstick out and it was perfectly on full. I started the cub let it run for a minute, checked the guage it was holding a big pressure, shut it off and checked it again. It was 1/4 below the full mark. Went to the garbage can and pulled out the 4 empty quarts to make sure I wasn't going crazy. I used Delo 400 30wt. by chevron. She's holding 4 full quarts somewhere, any idea's?

Maybe a bad seal on your hydraulic pump is causing it to leak in a new direction. Is your hydraulic reservoir too full?

In my experience, the filters don't "soak" up any appreciable amount of oil. Certainly not a quart. The only filters I've seen that hold an appreciable amount are the spin-on type, and then only if the filter is open-end-up.

As I recall, I put in 3-1/2 quarts, which as I recall, was the proper amount of oil based on my manual. Maybe I don't recall correctly, but that's what I recall, and the two cups of oil in the bottom of my 1-gallon Rotella jug aren't lying.

After nearly a year, the oil is down from the full mark by 3/16" when the engine is cold and has been sitting. Surely some oil is retained up in the filter housing, but most of it has to run out by gravity.

Last night I also changed the hydraulic oil, it wasn't over full, I switched it to the "red" dexron III. I'll run it a while and see what happens. The oil from the crankcase shouldn't get high enough to get inside the pump should it? I've heard of the hydraulic pumps leaking and pushing hydraulic oil into the motor oil, but never engine oil going into the hydraulic system. She's full we'll see what happens. Brandon. :D

It was a joke, son!

Brandon, I do think George was teasing you. Now for a crazy question. Which way are you putting in the dipstick, "full and low" on the upside or downside? Perhaps it isn't getting all the way down to the pan?
