generator bad

Postby mmann » Sun Feb 04, 2007 5:45 am

My '51(?) Cub was coming together nicely. Brought it home from my farm property and put it in heated, well lit garage and really went thru it
mechanically, something I have been planning for 2 years.

Everything went well up to and including paint and decals.

Then I took the generator and the voltage regulator to auto electric man and he tested it and said "bad" he said it could be rebuilt but it was off a chevy or something and not corrrect for 6 volt Cub.

Where should I go for a new generator? Should I buy new or are there rebuilt? Should I get a regulator at the same time? How much should I pay?

It is a 6 volt neg system.

I want reliability, first.

Thanks, you guys motivate me.

Yes, it was a Delco, and it was mounted on the Cub. But it was
cobbled on.....the generator body was too long for the braket on the Cub.
Someone had used a piece of pipe to extend the bracket and a long bolt.

The electric tester told me the armature was bad, along with the bearings
and the brushes.

Being not the correct generator, I thought now would be time to bring
it back to spec.

thanks

I don't have the time to do the research.. but the part # for the genny and all can be found in any of the TC-37 series Parts Catalogues on the Cub Manual Server under Cub Parts Manuals. Use that part number and they should be able to ref it over to the correct Delco unit. My AC Delco dealer's Repair Shop can do that...

With all the reported problems with that generator, replacement may well be the best choice. I have a 1950 Chevrolet generator (36 amps) that I do plan to install on a Cub. A new base mount will be fabricated and a three-coil regulator will be used to create a system that will appear to most folks to be original, but will outperform most of the original Cub systems.

I prefer keeping my cubs as close as orginal and maintain the 6 volt POSITIVE ground system.

As to getting a replacement (i would) contact TM tractor, JP tractor salvage, Ralphs cubs, or CUBGUY47 any one of these should have what you are looking for.......

Good luck, also if you havent got the service manuals rudi is talking about, would be a good investment......

Yes, I believe my Cub shuld be 6 volt POSITIVE ground, as it was
from the factory.

When I get the new/rebuilt generator and voltage regulator, I should install them and change the system to the proper positive system?

I will just wire it up and switch the battery cables, right?
Or do I polarize the system on installation?

I have one that I got real cheap on ebay with some other parts.... but it has the wrong pulley on it. I will have it checked before I do anything.

When I get em checked the guy wants the regulator with it, which is a good idea as they are more prone to be bad than the generator.

I just got the brackets to replace the gaffed up ones on mine and the regulator plate has a delco regulator on it... suppose I can get that tested along with one that came with the tractor.

Not sure how much it matters, but 'tractor' generators are a bit different from car generators, something about more amps at lower RPMs :?:

Notice you have your tractor listed as "'51(?) Cub". Before you get too deep into locating the "correct" generator, you need to nail down what correct was. Generators and regulators changed several times.

What is the serial number?

That is definitely a '51 serial, if it is in good enough shape to read correctly. The lower number should be 1800. The brackets remained the same for most Cubs, even when the generators changed. If you want to go with a fresh rebuild, check with the suppliers at the bottom of this page.

They can also fix you up with any brackets that are missing. Some of the minor parts changed depending on which generator. You probably should look at the parts book to see what might be missing. You have the bracket the regulator bolts to?
