Easing the installation of bearings onto shafts

Postby tori's dad » Fri Jan 12, 2007 11:53 am

An old pipeline trick is to take a 3 pound metal coffee can, some peanut oil
and a Wal Mart hot plate, put about 3 inches of oil in the can, place the bearing flat in the bottom of the can, put a paper match on top of the bearing, make sure the match has at least 2 inches of oil on top of it, turn on the hot plate. When the match ignites, and don't worry it won't set the oil on fire if it is covered with oil, turn off the hot plate and wait about 1 minute, the bearing will be at roughly 360 degrees f, and the bearing can be removed from the oil and slid onto the shaft. If you don't have electricity where you are working you can use your fish cooker, but don't try to heat the oil too fast as you can ruin your can in just a few minutes.
This removes the necissity of freezing the shaft.
A safety note here, wear a good pair of leather gloves to do this and handle the bearing with a doubled cotton cloth.
