Final Drive Relief

Postby S/C Bob » Thu Jan 11, 2007 11:45 pm

Today I built one of my drives. All went better than expected, had the axle in the freezer for two days and I put the bearings in my wife`s oven for a couple of hours....and by the way she wasn`t home today, probably a good thing!!! Anyway the thing shimed up good and the bearings turn great...One down and one to go...Soon I hope to hear her run again,Its been down for restoration since October or November.

I'm lucky that I have access to a press at work. But I forgot about the freezer, oven trick. That's one I'll put back in the data base. Another trick is to heat the bearing in hot oil in a pan over a hot plate. Just heat. One of the guys was doing that the other day in the shop and walked off and left the heat on. The oil got so hot it filled the shop with smoke. YUK.

If you want smoke, go outside and forget about the baby bottle nipples boiling on the stove.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Cecil, you're lucky you still have a place to work, after that stunt. :D

Lucky it wasn't me that did it. But considering who did it fits in. Great guy and a hard worker but real short on common sense. Boy it sure smelled up the place for a while. At least it was a little warm and they could open up all the overhead doors to air the place out.

We had two of these when I worked for Caterpillar. One this size and one twice the size that ran off 460v. They worked slick. Just don't walk away from the unit while it is on, it will cook a bearing in short time.

Bobby,

If your wife complains about putting stuff in the freezer, another option is a can of Freeze Spray. CRC makes the spray, and it instantly freezes upon contact at -60°F.
