More White Demo Info

Postby Dave Hull » Thu Dec 28, 2006 3:52 am

I know there is emotion tied to white paint, serial numbers and such...but I am starting to wonder if white paint was used at times outside the suspected range...for what I am not sure, but this latest ebay find for me(as GW might say) has me scratching my head. It is 77xxx serial number but has all kinds of white paint peeking from under the red. Correct police- don't worry about the grill in the pics and as you can see I may need some bracket bolting or welding for the front ear. Previous Owners' so-called wife was claimed to have hit a tree. I bet it was more like a jerk from a chain during a tow start gone wrong. Look at my photos..new with the links so be patient.. look under photos as my new page

Hi Dave.
Correct police- don't worry about the grill in the pics and as you can see I may need some bracket bolting or welding for the front ear.

The only thing that has me scratching my head is, if the wrong grille is showing obvious white paint, some white painting must have taken place sometime after the wrong grille install. When was that grille first offered on Cubs???

An early sixties cub has a white 4 bar grille factory. :D

The 4 bar grille was used from 58 to 63. But I believe it was the generic replacement from IH even after that so just about any cub that had front end damage could have had it added later.

Looks like a Heinz 57. -- '58-'63 grill, '55-'58 Lo-Boy dog legs, '49 serial plate. Not much on the front end to draw any conclusions from.

I think a compilation of the casting codes would give a clearer picture of the history of that Cub. My guess is that the radiator casting (and hence the serial number tag) will turn out to be not original to the tractor.

Dave,

When you have time to check the engine serial number and the casting numbers of the other major castings it may not be as much of a mystery.

Send us the list... We're all curious now.

Remember, many folks think Scruffy may be a demonstrator too but he's a '53 with a '48 hood.

Read the middle of the page to the right of the demo with the hood signage. From my understanding dealers couldn't get the demo's quick enough. This would explain why this tractor and the tractor we talked about earlier were white. In my opinion they're still demo's, used during the mid century promotion, just not painted at the factory. Dave's tractor is a 49, very well could have been left over stock on a dealers lot, and painted white to use in the program.

Casting Numbers

Postby Dave Hull » Thu Dec 28, 2006 11:35 am

The casting numbers on block, tube etc are all in the Month 3 and Month 4 with S castings. I will check more tonight. It did come from Kentucky- the guy had other parts to sell when I got there. It was a nice diversion on my way back to Indiana.
