Moved close to George
I just moved to Oak Harbor, Ohio ( next to Fremont and George) and have a couple acres of land so I will finally be able to use the 48 Cub that my uncle gave to me a few years back before he died. He made a point of telling me he had it for 50 years and it has never spent a night outside so I have accepted it with a strong feeling of responsibility. As a case in point it is in my garage while my truck stays out until I build a pole barn for my toys. It sat in a friends barn for the last 5 years and when I got word of my move I took it in and spent way to much getting it running well but my desire is to keep it that way myself. I’m a decent wrench but haven’t worked on tractors for years, my kids are grown and I am hoping for the time to play with it and eventually a full restoration but for now just want to use it.
George, now that I am close I hope to make it your way and suck some knowledge from you, so if you ever have a job you could use some help with I would consider it an honor to serve some apprentice time with someone as skilled as you are.
I have lurked at this site for years and feel like I have already picked up a lot and am sure I can get the answers to any problem with only a question. Still settling into the house and the boss (wife) probably won’t let me play with it to much until I get the boxes unloaded, but the first job is to get the snow blade mounted. It has moved a couple times and I am not sure I even have all the parts for it but from the picture here I think I have most of them.
http://www.tm-tractor.com/gim/early_blade.htm
I hope to actually be more active as I start working on it and have something worth while to add or ask but since my first intro was a few years ago and nothing since I figured I would start again. I will post pictures whenever I find my camera again I have a basement full of boxes. It sure is nice having a source as good as this forum to help me over the learning curve.
Thanks

Plumbroke - it's good to see you coming out of the shadows and joining in the fun. You are in a great location being close to Grandpa and Rick Prentice and others.
Welcome aboard and if we can help in any way we will be happy to.

And of course PWL! Phil is very near Oak Harbor... just south of the river. Phil and his sons have been very helpful to me. Great family!

First, to the greatest forum on the internet, and to the Cub Family. You will find that all the folks on this forum are kind, helpful and just full of Cub info and knowledge. They also happen to be the finest folks I have ever met
You will be well served with George along with Rick, Phil, BD and others close by. The Cub Fests alone will be very illuminating. Wow , inheriting your Uncle's Cub, makes having a Cub that much more personal.. family ties do that
Hopefully some of the info below will be useful to you. Don't forget to check the How To Forum for all kinds of neat tutorials and things. Lots to read.. enjoy.
Ok, so here is the spiel :
I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub.
Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I am always looking for YOUR favourite dealers for New and Used Parts to include here. These pages are intended to complement our Official FarmallCub.com Website Sponsors:
I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better is you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.
IF you really want to get the skinny on all things Cub, might I suggest you get a copy of Ken Updike's Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet's . While you are at it Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet is Ken's latest addition to the series. Along with Guy Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide, these are three must have's in anyone's collection.
In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.
Oh, and while the program still lasts.. you might want to check the Announcement: Navistar Free Gas Cap Offer - On-Line Form thread at the top of the Cub Forum and send away for the new style safety cap before that program runs out as well.
I truly hope that you enjoy your Cub and that you will be a frequent contributor to the forum. Again, to the Cub Family

Nice!!!! Those folks in Ohio are the BEST!
I really would agree with your uncle about keeping a tractor (or any equipment) under cover. It's pretty amazing that the 49 Cub I just bought is generally in better condition than the 71. And absolutely no comparison to the 50 that appears to have spent a lot of it's life outside.
Welcome!
Larry

January CubFest
A lot of folks are wondering... me too! Since time is drawing nearer I've decided to set a date. Saturday, January 13. However early until however late.
It seems there is a lot of interest, and I'm happy about that... but my heated shop space is limited, so we'll probably have mostly a social gabfest (CubFest?). That's the best kind! It will give all us the opportunity to become better acquainted. We'll probably do some smaller projects and tackle the larger ones as space and time permits. Anyone having a workbench project, bring 'em. Any questions, bring them.
Other stuff is certainly welcome and my outdoors is pretty big, but weather most likely will be a factor. We won't plow!..
A show of hands of who may be coming will help with planning. Let me emphasize... all who wish to come will be very welcome.
I'll send directions to all who respond. Please let me know.

I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.
