Which mower deck is your choice?

Postby Steve in Mo » Fri Dec 15, 2006 11:24 am

I am planning to purchase a mower deck for my 58 Cub. I now have a sickle bar and a blade so I think a mower would be a nice addition. What do you all think the single blade or the bigger three blade. Size not what is improtant as I will only be cutting about 2 acres, just which does a better job and is most reliable?
Once again thanks for all your informative help.

the 3 blade is a finishing mower and the 1 blade is more of a miniture bush hog.
3 blades leave a better cut 1 blade will cut a little rougher stuf

Stuff I mow is only occasionally cut... C-2 (brush mower) works great for that. Will cut anything you can get under it, except rocks!

Will see what I think of a Woods 59 next Summer.

Couple of different ideas.

1) IH Cub Cadet will easily handle two acres if kept mowed.

2) Mott flail mower works well. Does a reasonable job. Handles rocks well. Missouri's got rocks. Plenty of elevation of the mower to handle tall grass.

Steve,

I have and use both a Woods 42 (single blade) and the Woods 59 (three blade....like Donny's).

Like they mentioned.....the single blade will cut about anything....plus it can also leave a "finished" look if sharp and adjusted properly.

And I've used my Woods 59 for cutting 4 acres of field fescue. It does a fantastic job. I also cut my 2 acre yard with it.

You said "size" was not important. If you're cutting 2 acres regularly, you'll be glad you have the larger mowing deck.....as it will cut (no pun intended) your time down considerably. 8)

what mower

Postby Russ Leggitt » Fri Dec 15, 2006 7:49 pm

Hi Steve,

I have both a Woods 42 In and a Woods 59 In. They both, in my opinion,
do a fantastic job. The 59 I have on a completely re-build 1966 Lo-Boy and
if the grass gets very heavy or tall it takes most of the horsepower to pull
it. The 42 is on a 1974 that has never been re-built and it pulls it with no
problem even in tall and heavy grass. Of course, it takes much longer
for me to mow my four acres with the 42 than with the 59. So I would
think it is simply a matter of which do you want: plenty of power in case you
have to skip a mowing or two and it take longer or do you want to get the
job done in short order.

This is just my 1.5 cents worth.

Hey Steve, Like Russ said a 59" is at the max size for a cub. On my 55, freshly tuned, i can cruise along fairly well in 1st gear on my yard. Nothing more than that though, and i got to mow every week, otherwise i will have to make two passes, one elevated, and one lowered, if i dont the tall grass will not get cut and the mower will bind down and kill the engine. Ive heard of some people going in 2nd and 3rd with a 59" aint gonna happen here with my thick grass.

Well, I have 3 - Wood's 42's, a C-3 IH deck, a fast hitch Mott flail and a sickle bar mower. I have used them all at one time or another and they all do a fine job. It would be tough to pick just one.

I have a sickle bar mower and a fast hitch Mott flail. I was going to sell the flail mower until I used it at Cubfest NE. I was amazed at how well it cut the tall grass. I think I am going to redo the bearings and keep it.

Steve, I find the Wood's three blade to be a real durable mower. I have put a lot of hours on mine without a problem. This winter I am going to have to replace a couple of wheels, but that's the first thing I have to do to it other than sharpen the blades. Just one work of caution - the gear drive cost a little more but really holds up better than the belt drive units. A few extra dollars up front, but a lot less aggrevation later and belts can be expensive.

I have the 59 inch deck, works great for mowing the lawn, but thats its limit. You have to make sure that it is set right, (front low I believe) for it to work right. I can mow the lawn in 2nd gear. 8)

Mine are the woods 42 single blade they mow just as good or better than multi-blades, for me,---My cubs will only pull them in 1st gear and gotta mow every couple days or can't cut it at all with them! What little mowin I do is with a Dixon 44" with bagger blower on it (13 hp briggs)! looks like golf course when I get done! thanks; sonny

I use a Woods 59 for cutting the lawn every week or two and a Mott flail mower for the back field once a month. The Woods 59 requires the Cub to be in tip-top mechanical condition if you want to mow in second gear. The Mott is easier for the Cub to spin but the mower needs to be in tip-top condition if you want a clean cut.
