Decal Placement . . . Oh No Not Again!!

Postby Paul_NJ » Mon Dec 04, 2006 11:54 pm

I know this subject has been discussed over and over. But I just bought my first set of vinyl cut decals from Maple-Hunter, and the next warm day I can envision myself standing next to my Cub with my hands shaking.

OK . . . I've searched and read many of the archived articles on the subject.

1. I really wanted to read GW's "How To", but there are red "xs" where the photos should be. What's up with that? Is there a problem on my end?

2. George cut's away the excess plastic . . . but he says it's not necessairy on "laser cut" vinyl. Do I have "laser cut" vinyl, or just "cut vinyl", and does that make a difference in whether I should do some trimming? Sounds like rounding the corners is a minimum.

3. Several folks apply the decals dry, and with the wet applicators - some over Windex, some over water with a few drops of detergent. I assume everyone is talking about the self stick vinyl. I can see the advantage to being able to move them around to for final placement, but doesn't the soap lessen the adhesion of the vinyl decal?

I'm sure much of this becomes apparent after you do it once, but I'd sure hate to blow it now!! Any comments of clarification would be appreciated.

Paul, the red x's are because George has moved his photo's to a new location. This is because he has joined the now generation of high speed internet and has a new provider. I'm sure that when he see this he will provide the proper links or you can go to: http://www.gwill.net/ and look around at his photo links.

I believe the terms "Laser cut vinyl" and "cut vinyl" are the same thing.

On the use of lubricants ie soap or windex - once the decal is in place and the solution has dried, adherance is not a problem.

I used the same method for my decals as GW. I put a piece of masking tape (blue) on the top as a hinge, then I got the decal right where I wanted it. I cleaned the area with soap and water and wiped it away in one direction. Then I carefully pealed the backing off and from the top slowly worked it down. Before hand I made a slight roundover cut to each corner just to keep it from pealing up as easily. Don't worry, it will come out just fine. 8)
