Postby Larry Barb Dotson » Thu Nov 30, 2006 9:38 am

I went to the shop and measured the height of the seat on the 58 loboy and it was 37 inches high. I also checked my 184 loboy and it was also
37 inches high to the seat.

Thanks guys,

I think 8 inches would make a big difference, now I will have to add a low Boy to my Chrismas list ...

If Santa brings you a Lo-Boy that's only 7" lower than an F-Cub please don't be disappointed. Reasonably careful measurement shows the front to be 6 7/8" lower and the rear to be ~ 7" lower. The underslung exhaust and shorter intake stack will help too, but the steering wheel is still only about 7" lower. DUCK!

Its amazing what a differance 7 inchs can have on the on the feel for the tractor. I have had my 57 Lo boy for 14 years and have a good comfortable feel for how it will handles the terrain, then I bought this 51 F-Cub this summer it feels tippy on the slight slopes that I have and the wheel base is a little longer which also gives a new feel. I would think that with new front spindals and turning the rear bull heads you could make your F -Cub a Lo Boy  . Having both an F-Cub and Lo boy is cool 8) , they just look real sharp sitting side by side.

cecilia does have an underslug exhaust, i have to duck under most of my trees, Im afraid sometime im going to forget to duck and end up on the ground... but what is the reasoning of making the low boy only 8" lower ? that doesnt sound like a whole lot

Lowered much more than 8 inches, you would start to have trouble mounting mower decks etc. under it. As it is, there really isn't room enough for a blade.

I'm just guessing here, but here's what I think: From a practical standpoint, because the final drives are similar and use the same gears, the amount of offset was determined by the radius of the final drive gears. By making the change in location 90 degrees from original the special machining for the Lo-Boy finals could be symetrical. So... The amount of lowering was dependant on the combined radius of the two final gears, 7".

BTW, Many believe the finals can simply be bolted on differently to create a Lo-Boy from an F-Cub. Not so, for many reasons! The change in direction of pull of the rods was probably the reason for the introduction of toggle brakes.

But an F-Cub could be made into a Lo-Lo-Boy by rotating the finals 180 degrees and it would be 14" lower. :D There would be a few other details to work out. :( :(

Someone recently posted pictures of such a Cub.

A good friend of mine moved to a hilly terrain with a lot of low branched trees and he was about ready to sell his ’58 regular Cub for a wider lower tractor to accommodate his needs. After we talked little about the issue he had, we converted the tractor to an “under slung exhaust” and reversed the rear wheels outwards. After that the tractor handled the yard work just fine.

I may have made a big mistake about showing him how to convert the tractor because he was going to sell it to me at a very reasonable price.

The “Lo - Boys” are nice; I would like to have one.
