This engine really gets around. It's about to go in it's 3rd, (and hopefully final) tractor. I got this motor out of my very first cub. It was shot to say the least, but I had a local engine shop overhaul it completely. It's been a great motor ever since. It has an unusual port next to the oil filter. It had to be cast that way because there are absolutely no welds. It also has what I think are unusual casting marks on the oil filter canister, just below the decal. The casting date on the block is Feb. Z. Any ideas?
I've tossed this question out before....a couple of years ago, during the last swap. We have so many more people onboard now...perhaps some fresh ideas.

Harold,
If you can give us the engine serial number someone should be able to determine which power unit application it was originally built for. None of the power unit engines I have on Cubs have that casting difference. Mine are from 50-T balers.

Just for grins and giggles I checked my NOS block and found no serial number on it and I've forgotten the casting date by the time it took me to walk back to the house. But I'm pretty sure it was an X.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

It has a casting date of 2-26-Z, which I think is 1954. However, no serial number. I wonder if a previous owner just ordered a new engine from his I/H dealer and that's what was sold as a replacement engine. We'll never know. I was told this tractor came from an apple orchard in Wisconsin. Must have gotten a lot of work...judging by the condition it was in.
Now the question....what was used in the fitting? Temp probe? Seems a pretty strategic location.

Well, I did some research. Turns out Palmer engine company did a modifcation for the cub engine for the use on sail boats. Once I found out about Palmer, I came back to this forum, plugged it in the search....and yep! Jim Becker mentioned the Palmer application when someone had bought a bunch of NOS blocks. I'm guessing I/H made a few more than Palmer needed and dispersed them as needed. Anywho......here's a pic. You can see familiar parts.
