primer?
Lookeed for an answer throughout the forum. no luck. Gwtting ready to paint the Old Cub, sanding down the hood - ccoulndn't seem to find any primer. My minimal paint experience tells me different color primers can affect the final shading. I prefer Rust -Oleum primer for its durability and good hiding qualities. Red tractor- Red primer? Any ideas? Thanks Frank

Your primer really should be the brand as your paint, however I've seen many different combinations work. I would use a grey primer under the red, just so you ca see any areas you miss while spraying the top coat. I tried red on red once and will never try that again.

Junkman,
This may be the only thread I can offer up any help on....
NAPA sells a Martin Senior paint line that if simply fantastic if you are going to shoot this with a paint gun. 15210 Etching primer is great and comes in different shades to align with the finish colors. They also have a sealer CS279 that goes on after the primer and within 8 hours of the finish paint. This has to be covered within 8 hours by the final coat or you need to scuff and reshoot with CS279 again. The NAPA I go to in this small Maine town also has the Internation Farmall RED in a fleet color for about $42 a gallon. The important thing to remember is for a quality paint job, you want to stick with one vendor of the product. IE PPG, House of Kolor or Martin Senior. Do not mix and match different makes. The result is not always the best and Daniel H. mentioned this as well.
If you need more info, don't hesitate to post again to this topic as I will watch for any questions.....

Funny.... My NAPA guy down here didn't mention any $42 paint ($160 gal.) I bought a gal. in Tractor Supply in Conn. for around $26. but now I have concerns about U.V. protection. THis paint is made by Valspar but it says nothing about U.V. I would rather spend more money on something thats going too hold a shine for longer than 1 yr. By the way I am currently looking at prperty in Brownfield Me. Is that your neighborhood?

On the self etching primer: you don't need a heavy coat, so if you don't have a lot of bare metal you can just use a rattle can or two.
I prefer not to use gray primer under IH red, I think it leaves the color a little light and requires a lot more paint to get a good cover. Red oxide works well for me. The modern ,2 part, primers are available in buff color, I want to give that a try.

I had the exact same question when I was ready to paint.
I used Rustolium rattle can primer in both gray and black colors. I sprayed the color coat with the Case IH Red Rough. The primer color had no effect on the final coat color or shade.
I am not sure who gave me the advice but I was told by one of the guys on this forum that when using enamal top coats the primer color has no effect on the final color. His advice was sound.

Well... Gents it looks like there is no hard and fast rule to this enigma, so the front of the Cub just got a good coat of Rust Oleum Red primer, one more to go, it does such a nice job of filling in all the casting defects. Not 100% sure of the brrand for the topcoat yet. Thanks to all for your help. Frank
