We don't get too cold here, but the year before last was the coldest I can remember here and I did get ice in the tank (only a 5 gallon one then).
Like George says, it does generate it's own heat. I can't see where it would cause any problem even if it did freeze either in use or not. It could crack a trash can, but should be fine with something thicker like the blue drums.

Here is what I did... cause I am too cheap for the heater tape, way too cheap for a tank heater and way too cheap to keep it running all the time.. These were ideas for those who are worried about it freezing.
I emptied just it.. But I think too that if you leave it, it will have to get quite cold before it becomes an issue... and even if it does freeze, I really don't think it will freeze up solid, nor do I seriously think it will break the barrel.
For those who do not want to risk it, try the tape or whatever.. and see what happens. If cost is an issue.. turn it off.. and forget about it... pretty simple..

Mine froze solid last year with a dogleg for a hood in it. Probably because the anode needed cleaning and I was only drawing about 2 amps. This year it looks like it will be pretty busy from the size of the pile of parts that is growing in the shop from the most recent tear down. Oh electrolysis you got to love it.
