Engine Bearing Question

Postby Northdm » Mon Nov 27, 2006 8:12 pm

All,

Hate to bother you with rookie questions, but I received a call from my machinists today saying the crank was .010 under since machined. I am positive that this was not previously worked since the Cub has been in my family since birth. I am supposed to order the bearings but have 1 question: Would this mean that I need to order main engine bearings .010 and connecting rod bearings .010 as well :?: :?: I'm assuming this is the case....

Thanks again

NorthDM

Normally you would order both the rod and main inserts (bearings) .010 under.

In this case, I would specifically ask the machinest, face to face.

Since you seem, from the "sound" of your post, to be doing the re-assembling yourself, I'd say wait until you get the thing back in your possession, and measure it yourself. That way, if you are mistaken, you have no one to blame but yourself.........

typically the cranks I have had machined were .010 on the mains and .010 on the rods. So you may want to contact your machinist to clarify the demensions before you order the correct bearings.

Not necessarily. The mains could be .010 and the rods .020, or a combination of any numbers. The mains may not have been turned down at all and the rods could have been turned .040 for example. But all 4 rods will be turned the same and all 3 mains will be turned the same. If for some unknown reason you can't talk to your machinist, it will be on your receipt and marked on the crankshaft in permanent marker. But as SteveB said, check it yourself and when you are satisfied with your findings, check it again and get the corresponding bearings.

Yep, he PROBABLY meant that ALL the journals have been turned down .010, BUTTTTTTT... You know what they say when you assume, right? Ask, an measure. Trust, but verify.

Is there a reason you are not getting them form the machine shop. My locla shop can supply them as cheaply as anywhere else, and then there is no worry.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I did talk to the machinist and he did confirm .010 on both bearing sets. I ordered them yesterday from TMTractor and they beat Yesterdays Tractor parts that I ordered a week ago. I have no issues with the quality of material I have received from both companies thus far, but dealing with Tom @ TMTractor was pleasant and very quick to get it shipped. That alone has left an impression with me. I'm a fan......
