I believe it is the phosphate in the TSP that inhibits the formation of rust. Take a look at the Picklex website. I think the chemical processes are probably very similar.

Ironically, it is also the phosphate that presents any potential pollution issues. I believe they would be more related to surface water sources than sub-surface sources, though.

I suppose the relative humidity of your location could also have something to do with whether parts flash rust or not. I would think that things would rust quicker in the higher humidity levels of the southeast than in the normally lower levels of the the southwest or the north.

Well I am not so sure about it being the Tri-Sodium PHOSPHATE that does the trick.

When we were at Cecil's, I was astounded that the PHOSPHATE FREE version that was available in New York worked like the real stuff.. I was impressed with Cecil's comments on the flash rusting, as it coincided with my experiences... but when I found out he used PHOSPHATE FREE TSP.. I was incredulous..

So, I am beginning to think that maybe it is the concentration of the solution.. that makes the difference..

Cecil was able to get the Savogran version and I am a DAP believer.. much like Country and KROIL
