Sorry another dumb cub question about tires

Postby BigBill » Sun Nov 12, 2006 7:39 pm

If you put the larger 9.5 x 24 tires on your cub do you go with larger tires in the front too to even it off? Is there anything we can use thats larger than 400-12's? Would the 600-12's be too big for the front? I was thinking of going with 9.5's on my 154.

I'm getting ready to restore my 154(paint) and install the SIMS cab I just purchased and the orginal 8.3 tires may look too small. I would like to trick out the 154 too with rear fenders with headlites in them just like the bigger tractors. I think it would be neat for snowplowing at night.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

tires

I have 9.5-24 on 2 of my cubs with 400-12 tires on front and the tractors sit level plus I like the look of the bigger rear tires.

I think that 9.5X24 are the same heighth as 8.3X24 but are wider. They should look good without making the front end look low. The first number on the tires indicates width and the second, wheel diameter.

The front tires remain the same. 4.00x12.

The only problem that I have seen with the larger tires is with the moldboard plow if your plowpoint is worn the taller tires make it hard to keep the plow in the ground. even with the draft lever all the way forward. Cal in Ct.

Big Bill, the standard front wheel is just 2 1/2" wide. Getting the 400-12 tire on it is difficult enough. Wider would be a real problem.

The PO put 5.00x12's on the front of my loboy. They do look squished on there. Now I have a question. What is the difference between 400x12's and 4.00x12's? Is this another notation change like the rear tractor tires went through? http://www.millertire.com/FAQs.asp

400x12's and 4.00x12's - same thing.

I have 500x12 fronts on my cub. They are are wider rims like you would see on a cub cadet. I like them. the rears are 8x24

I have some 5.00 x 12's that I bought off of eBay from Tucker a while back. I haven't mounted them yet but I noticed they are definitely taller than the 4.00 x 12's. They would probably look better than 4.00 x 12's when used with 9.5 x 24 rears.

My Ford 1520 has 9.5 x 24's on the rear. They are taller than the 8.3 x 24's. I'll measure tomorrow and report back here if my ancient mind can remember to do so.

I checked the tire heights today. The 8.3 x 24's measured 39 1/4" tall and the 9.5 x 24's measured 41" tall. The lug wear on both is about the same.
