Thanks for all the condolences, guys. I'm well over it now...but it was hard to believe just how quickly an event can turn on you by taking one little shortcut. I have learned that lesson. Hopefully my future lessons won't be so unrepairable.
And sorry Mike, if I took pics now....it would appear even worse than it was as she is really stripped down.
My new mowing machine is a sweet running '53 with the front axle extended out all the way and the rear turf wheels/tires mounted as wide as they'll go. She's sportin' a 59" Woods and mows pretty fine.
Looks a bit like something on the "Road Warrior" though. Maybe a picture of this one is in order.....before I take her out to the mountain property

Almost brought a tear to my eyes! But now I don't feel quite as bad that one shovel of mud tipped the wheelbarrow full of swill back into the ditch I was digging this morning! At least I wasn't under it when it went.
I learned at a young age never to stand in front of (or behind) something being started. But age has (hopefully) taught me to check the shifter before starting anything and that no matter how much you think you know.... you don't always know it at the right moment.
Kirk's story remided me of my friend's M on a hill top (what a view!) in the White Mountains.... went to finish bailing and the tractor was missing. Went a pretty good ways down the hill before fetching up. So far in fact, they they thought it was stolen! But it was in the woods pretty far.
I hate to see a machine damaged.... but there are more of em around, people are a whole different story.

Congratulations on relating a sad story in such an entertaining manner. Glad you were not hurt.
We live north of you in the Ozarks and I always worry about our hills (mountains). Now I will try and be doubly careful to always set the brake properly or block the wheel.
Thanks again,
