Sickle bar mower use

Is the sickle bar mower designed to be used "dragging on the ground"? Or should it be lifted above the ground for use?

Normally they operate with the shoes on each end of the cutter bar running on the ground.

Is it ok to raise them up and cut above ground if you want to leave the grass longer?

I always run ours right on the ground, I thought that's what they were designed to do with that ski looking part right where the sickle lets down. :D

You can do it, won't hurt anything. The results from trying to often end up pretty uneven. You can adjust the shoes to cut higher but I don't think you can get as high as Ketcham's 4 inches without some special parts.

I don't know if they are still available, but IH used to sell tall runners for clipping weeds in new pasture.
