1956 Cub photo research help

Postby funeralweb » Sun Nov 05, 2006 2:10 pm

I have gone through some (not all) Farmall related publications and am having a hard time finding an example of what a 1956 looked like when new. I notice paint/chrome schemes vary from year to year and I want to "get it right" when my '56 goes under the sprayer. The mechanicals are being overhauled right now. Any help would be appreciated but I am most interested in the front wheels (red or red/silver?) and seat pattern (silver or 2-tone?). I promise to drool over anything you good people submit.

From the facory the front wheels would be all red and the seat would have been all silver.

Here are some pictures of my 56 - it's still in it's original clothes.

B.D.
I thought the 56-58 years had white grilles. Did part of the 56 model year still use red?

White grilles started with the 57 model year although I recall someone mentioning that some of the very late 56's may have had them.

Dad's '56 was Red all over, red front wheels and all silver delux seat. Wish I had pictures. Maybe it's still running today, somewhere close by. Other model years had white grill and maybe white on hood behind crome?

My 56 Loboy #3917 has original, but poor, paint and has the white grille and white background for the emblems on the hood sides. I'd say it is a very late 56. Mike

OK, here is the scoop. The Louisville plant was running in1956, building Cubs, Lo-Boys, 100s and 200s. They produced tractors each month through September. These models were all red. At or near the end of September they shut down. No tractors were built in October. In November, they started building again. Since it was late in the year, these tractors obviously were for the '57 "season" even though they were built in '56. At that point, they started building Cubs, Lo-Boys, 130s and 230s, the new models. Since the 130s and 230s had the 2 color scheme with white grills and the white decal on the sides, it is reasonable to ASSUME the Cubs and Lo-Boys got the same treatment at the same time.

So IF the change was made along with the change to 130s and 230s, the first Cubs built in November '56 were the first to come with white. Because of that logic, I ASSUME the November start numbers were the first ones done that way.

The first Farmall Cub in November '56 was 197825 and the first Cub Lo-Boy was 3772. So I am GUESSING those serial numbers were the start point for the white grille and side decals.

Mike, the last Lo-Boy in '56 was 3928 and yours was built in December '56.

I'm not sure, but I think Jim miss-typed and meant '56. This, if true, is very rare.
