What size tap to clean implement threads ?

Postby rick 48 cub » Thu Nov 02, 2006 11:25 pm

Hi All,

What size tap should I purchase to clean out the threads for the many bolt holes in the cast iron of the Cub. I believe that I turn the bolts with a 1" wrench.

Thanks
Rick 1948 cub

Rick. Should be 5/8-11, and yes, you used a 1" wrench or socket.

For cleaning the threads, especially the ones in the rear drive housings, a bottoming tap will be the better choice. For the rear drive housings, be sure to remove packed debris from the holes to provide full depth for the bolt.

1" wrench? Installing the fast hitch last weekend, I needed a 15/16" for all the bolts. Reeeeeeeally needed a 15/16" socket for my breaker bar, and wouldn't you know it, that is the ONLY socket my set doesn't come with? Goes straight from 7/8" to 1".

Matt my guess is the mounting bolts for your hitch were replacements . All the tapered mounting bolts I have encountered on my cubs have been 1".I'm surprised that your socket set had the 7/8 most don't.
