spark plug wires

Postby kylev » Fri Oct 20, 2006 7:30 pm

This may be a stupid question but I am trying to connect back my spark plug wires after rebuilding my engine and I don’t know what order they go in. I know the firing order but which one is cylinder 1 and which plug on the distributor is number 1?

I have a distributor not a mag.
This is the one I have

Any one have an idea of what wire to put where on the distributor ?
Any help would be great.

Number 1 cylinder is the front cylinder nearest to the radiator
Number 1 in the cap is marked as such on most cub caps
The firing order is i believe 1-3-4-2 clockwise around the cap
You also have to be shure that Number 1 cylinder is at top center on the compression stroke and not on the exhaust stroke.

Check your timing before you attempt to start.

i.e. #1 piston at TDC, timing pointer at notch mark on pulley, and most important, distributor pointing at the #1 plug wire.

The manual should also show you your spark plug wiring orientation.

Thanks guys I did make sure it is at TDC and the mark on the pulley is at the pointer. The distrributor turns and there is clamps that clamp it down to set timing. How do I know where to start with that setting? Ground lug pointing up down left right?

Thanks

Once you have number 1 at TDC, install the distributor so that the rotor is pointing to the number 1 position on the cap. It should start and from there rotate the distributor until it is running the smoothest. I do it by ear but a lot of folks use a timing light.

remember what Ralph said that crankshaft pulley can be on the TDC pointer both on compression and exhaust stroke so be sure it is on compression
