next oil seal question

Postby Bob McCarty » Fri Oct 06, 2006 9:39 pm

The new seal is thinner than the old one. Do I want to drive it to the bottom of the seat, or leave it flush with the top where the thrust washer sits against it?

Bob,

Put it in flush and you should be good to go.

Just thinking out loud  If you use two seals on the same shaft I would think the outer most seal would wear out rather quickly. The inner most seal would "seal" all the lubricant from the outer seal, thus wearing it out much faster. Just a thought.

I would take advantage of the new seals narrower profile and seat it deeper. The sealing lips would ride in a new spot on the shaft. Have done this before when possible.

1. i am not a mechanic by any means. all i have learned is in books, and some of it i have actually applied. So having said that,

2. one of the many tractor restoration books that i have read, suggested, due the advancement of seals that in some places they will need to be doubled to ensure proper matting of the surfaces and sealing of the joint.

3. just passing information on, not that i have personally used it.

I agree that this may be helpful.

I still think that doubling up on the seals is a waste of a good seal, as the outer seal will never see any lubricant...unless the inside seal fails.

I also use a double lip seal when possible to keep stuff out as well as keeping vital fluids in. I'm not in favor of doubling up. If a good quality seal riding on a smooth shaft won't seal it some other action is necessary..IMHO.
