ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER

Postby don eicher » Mon Sep 25, 2006 10:09 pm

PURCHASED FARMALL CUB SERIAL NIMBER ON THE PLATE IS 65837. THE ENGINE HAS RED OVER YELLOW OVER RED PRIMER PAINT. OBVIOUSLY CHANGED OUT. THE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE MOTOR IS 60CT2U313481X. ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE NUMBER IS ALL ABOUT? THE CASTING NUMER IS 11 7 Y. IT IS ABOUT 1" TALL AND VERY FAINT CAST. NOT LIKE THE REGULAR SMALLER CASTING NUMBERS,THAT REALLY STAND OUT.

The serial plate is 1949, but the casting code you listed is 1953. Not sure about the engien seial number, it may indicate a power unit from baler, or soemthing similair.

Casting date code "Y" came along again in 1975, which is probably what this engine is. A check of the block part number will confirm this if it ends with "R8".

I was trying to place that serial seqence, but that is the type they used on the numbered cubs isn't it? If so it should have domed pistons, 1 /14 inch manifold, etc., correct?

If it has the smaller manifold, it probalby has flat top pistons, but accordign to my book the change was amde at engine serial 264568. My book however is for standard cubs, not mumbered lowboys which it appears that engien may have come form, so the only way to tell is to look wihtout having info on what engine came from.. One thing, if the head part number is 355691R2, it should be for domed pistons.

Rambo's engine is from a 154. Head #355691R2 and block #251341R8. It came with the normal manifold, but with 1 1/4" exhaust. It had the IH 3/4" carb. (still has).

No, Don. It looks more like a normal Cub engine serial number.

The part number 355 691 R2 for the engine head is the only one offfered in the TC-37F parts catalog. So one might assume that the domed piston engines used the same head as did some of the regular Cubs.

the R2 indicates a modification over the roiginal. My ollder dubs have R1 heads on htem. I assume that when IH started making the heads with additional clearance for domed pistons they dropped the R1 and only made the newer style heads since they would work either way. I have seen previous posts about people using the domed pistons in the earlier heads and having to grind out an area for clearance.

SERIAL NUMBER MYSTERY

Postby don eicher » Fri Sep 29, 2006 9:31 pm

It appears, that at least ,the Cub 184 Lo Boy has the unusal to a regular Cub serial number that I have on the latest Cub. Found one at my local mechanics shop today and the engine number is just like mine, except a few hundred difference in the number. Tractor serial is 46260. As I understand his is a 1978. Will try to have the hood off mine tomorrow to check. Sure will "upset" me to have an 18 HP motor on hand.Guess I can find something to do with it. LOL
