rear end bolts - grade 5?

Postby Dan W. » Mon Sep 25, 2006 6:48 pm

I tore down the rear end on my '47 Cub this summer and am now putting it back together. I need some new bolts and cap screws. At this point I'm bolting the left final drive and the right differential shaft housing to the differential case. Problem is that the bolt packages listed in the parts manual didn't seem right so I went to the hardware store. They had the lengths I needed only in grade 5. I wanted grade 8. Will grade 5 be strong enough in the long run?

Given that the castings are not especially thick at the bolting points and my hunch that Grade 8 was not original, I would use the Grade 5 for my personal tractor. Buying Grade 8 overlength and cutting to length is another option.

My yeller Cub had grade 5 everywhere. They were factory bolts, no dots on the newer ones.

Thanks for the replies. What does the dot on the bolt head indicate? And if the factory bolts lack the usual markings for grade 5, grade 8, etc. how can you tell what grade they are?

Someone wiser than me could say, but I believe that IH made their own bolts in the old days. The infamous 'dot' bolts.

Not my favorite job, but I ran em all through a wire wheel, primed and painted em.
