Just double checking my IT manueal, it calls for.015 on all the valves.
Does .015 seem right to you? First thing in the AM I'll be doing valve clearances .

So Jim .013 good for a 49 cub.
My IT book say's .015. I set at .013, hope I don't have to go back ito it. I checked it last night and a keeper lock was not seated properly around the valve. Got into it and had to take two phillip's head screw drivers to lift the valve spring and had my oldest son fishing the tapered locks back on. one more thing,TIP, Make sure when using tools around the valves, put a rag or something to cover the oil returns had a socket I was using it to pry up off and clunk, clunk, clink right in the oil pan. WOW! so we had to take the pan off as well. Did find some metal in the bottom of the pan. Where would that be from. I have been changing the oil after the rebuild. kind of looked around, did'nt see anything really .

A magnet on a flexible handle is also good for fishing the keeper out of the oil pan. Don't ask how I know. The metal is most likely form the crank bearings running in. Might check to see if it sticks to a magnet.
The latest IH service manual also says .015. The first one I rebuilt I set to the .013 that was in the manual I had 20 years ago, though I set it to a loose .013. Later ones I set to .015 to match newer manual.

I don't know what is gained at .015 thats just what the IT manuel called for. I don't think there would be a noticable differance in performance at .013 or .015. I think that on any engine as the valve face and seat wear the gap clearance would tighten up as the valve sinks lower. My 51 was so tight before the adjustment that I could not get a gauge in..PWL wrote:what is gained by opening up .015 . I have my hunches.
