Sand blast abrasive

Postby Mass49Cub » Fri Aug 18, 2006 4:49 pm

Hi all,

I bought a complete set of cultivators and id like to sand blast and repaint them. Any good suggestions for what abrasive or abrasives i should use? They have a decent layer of rust on them, nothing too bad. Thanks for your help!

Or make an electrolysis tank and let electricity do most of the work.

If it is available in your area, I have best results with # 60 grit white Silica. I can but it in bulk for about $30.00 a ton. I use it only once and do not try to recover it... Gene

Mass49Cub:

Have a look at this article: Rudi’s 45 Gallon Electrolysis Tank. Probably easier and cheaper than media... plus it is re-useable many, many times..

Hi Mass49,

To expand upon Jim Becker's post: I use the electrolysis method of de-rusting metal and then I have a small syphon type sand blaster [campbell-Hausfeld] and RMS type blasting medium. This material is a by-product of smelting and is many times better than sand and it is enviornmentally safe also safe to you. Has very low risk of hazard to humans. It is about $10.50 for 100 lbs. I also have made a recovery trap out of a small plastic kids swimming pool and put up a tarp 2/3 of the way around it. I can recover about 75 per cent of the material and use over and over again.

The good thing about the electrolysis method and blasting is you remove very little if any actual base metal. It also takes about 1/10 the amount of blasing material.

If you are not famaliar with the electrolysis method Rudi has the instructions on how to build in how to section.

Hope this helps you out.

Just did one of the same last weekend with the white silica, works great and you can pickup 50 pound bags at Menards. Can not remember the price but was cheap. CHUCK :D
